Quick answer: open the PDF in Preview, choose File > Export, pick JPEG in the Format pop-up menu, choose a name and click Save. Preview's export saves one image file, which suits a single page. To turn every page into its own JPG in one go, open this page in Safari or Chrome, add the PDF, pick 72, 150 or 300 DPI and click Convert to JPG, then Download ZIP. The PDF stays on your Mac.

Turning PDF pages into JPGs on a Mac

People usually want a JPG because a form, website or chat app accepts images but not PDFs. Which route is quicker depends on how many pages you need.

One page: Preview's Export

Preview is already on every Mac. Open the PDF, choose File > Export, pick JPEG in the Format menu and click Save. If you don't see the format you want, Apple notes that holding Option while clicking the Format pop-up menu shows more formats. For a single page, that is all you need.

Many pages: convert them together

A ten-page statement or a slide deck means ten images. This page renders every page and names them page-1.jpg onwards, so the order is obvious when you upload or attach them. Download ZIP saves them all in one file.

Getting the size right

Each JPG's size depends on resolution and quality. If a form limits each image, start at 150 DPI; drop to 72 DPI or lower the quality slider if the files are still too big. For printing, use 300 DPI and leave quality at 90% or above.

Going the other way

To turn photos or JPGs back into one PDF on a Mac, see JPG to PDF on a Mac, which covers Finder's Create PDF quick action and Preview.

Before you upload/share

  • Open the PDF and check every page before you send or upload it.
  • Keep the original files until the recipient or portal has accepted the document.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to JPG in Preview?

Open the PDF in Preview, choose File > Export, click the Format pop-up menu and choose JPEG, type a name or pick a folder, then click Save. Apple's guide lists HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG and TIFF in that menu.

Can Preview export every page of a PDF as JPGs?

Apple's guide describes saving one converted file and doesn't cover multi-page PDFs. If you need each page as a separate JPG, this page converts every page at once and gives you a ZIP.

Which resolution should I choose?

150 DPI for email, web forms and sharing. 300 DPI if the image will be printed or has small text. 72 DPI if the upload has a tight size limit.

Can I get PNG instead?

Yes. Choose PNG in Preview's Format menu, or use PDF to PNG here, which also converts every page.

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. Pages are drawn by your browser on your Mac and saved as JPGs there. Free use covers files up to 50MB, 2 tasks a day.
