Sign a PDF on iPhone (free, no app)

Quick answer: the iPhone can sign a PDF on its own. Open the PDF in the Files app, tap the Markup (pen tip) button, tap +, choose Add Signature, draw with your finger and drag the signature into place, then tap Done. If you'd rather not draw on the document itself, or want the same signature on every page, use this page in Safari: add the PDF, draw, type or upload your signature, choose the page and position, and download a signed copy. The document stays on your phone.

How this tool helps

Add your signature to a PDF without printing it. Draw your signature with your mouse or finger (on touchscreens), type your name in a signature font, or upload a PNG or JPG of your signature. Choose the first page, the last page or every page, a position (bottom right, bottom left, bottom centre or centre) and a size, then download a signed copy. It suits letters, forms and agreements with the signature at the foot of the page. This adds a visual signature, not a certificate-based digital signature. Your document and signature stay on your device. Use it when you need to protect pdf, compress pdf, flatten pdf.

Signing a PDF on iPhone: which way to use

Apple's Markup and this browser tool both add a picture of your signature to the PDF. Neither is a certificate-based digital signature. Pick the one that suits where the signature has to go.

How do I sign with Markup in the Files app?

Open the PDF in Files, tap the Markup button, tap +, then Add Signature (or tap a saved one). Draw it, tap Done, drag it onto the signature line and resize it with the blue corner handles. Tap Done to save. Markup edits that file itself, so duplicate it first (press and hold > Duplicate) if you need an unsigned copy.

When is the browser tool easier?

When you need the same signature on every page, when you want to use a typed or scanned signature instead of finger-drawing on the document, or when you want a separate signed copy and to keep the original untouched. Placement is fixed to the bottom or centre of the page, so it suits letters and forms with the signature at the foot of the page.

How do I send the signed PDF?

Downloads from Safari go to Files > Downloads. Press and hold the signed PDF to share it to Mail, WhatsApp or AirDrop. If an upload form rejects it as too large, run it through Compress PDF with a 2MB or 5MB target.

What about documents that must be witnessed?

A drawn or typed signature is fine for most agreements, forms and letters. Deeds, wills and lasting powers of attorney have their own signing and witnessing rules, so follow what the solicitor or the official guidance asks for rather than signing on your phone.

Before you upload/share

  • Open the PDF and check every page before you send or upload it.
  • Keep the original files until the recipient or portal has accepted the document.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign a PDF on iPhone without an app?

Open the PDF in the Files app, tap the Markup button (a pen tip), tap +, then Add Signature. Draw your signature, tap Done, drag it into place, resize it with the corner handles and tap Done again. It also works on PDF attachments in Mail.

Where can I put the signature with PDFWhisk?

On the first page, the last page or every page, at the bottom right, bottom left, bottom centre or centre, in three sizes. There is no free dragging; if your signature line is somewhere else on the page, use Markup in the Files app instead.

Is a drawn signature on a PDF legally valid in the UK?

For most everyday documents, yes: a simple electronic signature can be used under the Electronic Communications Act 2000 and UK eIDAS. Deeds, wills and documents that need a witness still need the formalities the law or the other party asks for.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and signed by Safari on your phone. Your signature is drawn on the page and added to the file locally, so neither is sent to PDFWhisk.

Can I remove the signature later?

No. It is added to the page as an image and saved into the new file. Keep the original unsigned PDF, which is never changed.
