Quick answer

Wrongly oriented PDF pages are one of the most common document annoyances, a scanned contract that is landscape when it should be portrait, a mobile scan that comes out sideways, or an exported report where one page is upside down. PDFWhisk's PDF rotation tool lets you fix individual pages or rotate the entire document in one go, entirely in your browser.

How to rotate a PDF using PDFWhisk

  1. Open the tool, go to pdfwhisk.com/rotate-pdf.
  2. Load your PDF, drag the file onto the page or tap to select it from your device or cloud storage.
  3. Select pages to rotate, choose whether to rotate all pages or specific page numbers. For a single sideways page in a longer document, enter just that page number.
  4. Choose rotation direction, 90° clockwise, 90° anti-clockwise, or 180° (upside down). You can preview the effect before saving.
  5. Apply and download, the corrected PDF saves to your device with the original filename.

Common reasons pages end up the wrong way

Phone or tablet scans are the most frequent cause. Scanning apps read the phone's orientation sensor, but if the phone is not held perfectly straight, pages come out slightly rotated or fully sideways. Flatbed scanners with document feeders also occasionally feed pages at the wrong angle, particularly if the sheet slips in the tray.

Screen capture tools sometimes export pages rotated by 90 degrees, especially when capturing from a landscape-oriented window into a portrait PDF layout.

PDF exports from design software can produce rotated pages if the source document uses page orientation settings that do not match the export settings. This is common with exports from InDesign or Canva when the document and export template use different orientation settings.

Rotating one page without affecting the others

If only one page in a multi-page document is sideways, you do not need to rotate the entire file. In PDFWhisk, select only the affected page number in the page selection field. The rest of the document remains unchanged. This is particularly useful for scanned documents where most pages are fine but one sheet was fed incorrectly.

Does rotation permanently change the file?

Yes, PDF rotation applies the rotation to the page content and saves a new version of the file. The original is not modified; you download a corrected copy. If you rotate and then want to undo it, rotate by the same amount in the opposite direction, or go back to the original file and start again.

Unlike a screen rotation or a viewing preference in some PDF apps, this is a permanent change to the file structure. The rotated PDF will open correctly in any viewer on any device without the recipient needing to adjust settings.

Rotating a PDF on iPhone or Android

The tool works on mobile. Open pdfwhisk.com/rotate-pdf in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android. Load the file from your Files app or phone storage, select the pages, apply the rotation, and save. The corrected PDF is saved to your downloads or can be shared directly from the browser without needing a separate app.

What if the text is correct but the page is wrong size?

Rotation fixes orientation but does not change page dimensions. If you have a landscape A4 page that should be portrait A4, rotating 90 degrees will correct the orientation but the page will still have landscape dimensions. In most cases this is fine, the PDF viewer adjusts the display. If you need the page dimensions themselves to change, that requires re-exporting from the source document.

Reordering pages after rotation

If you need to both rotate and reorder pages, for example a scanned document where some pages are sideways and also out of order, do both in sequence. Rotate first to correct orientation, then use PDFWhisk's page reorder tool to arrange the pages in the correct sequence. Both operations run locally in your browser and can be done without any account.
